A Democratic official who helped Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gain support before her first election now says she has let down the people in her Queens neighborhood. According to this official, the area has become more dangerous and crime-ridden under her leadership.
Crime like open-air prostitution, robberies, and petty thefts have been on the rise, and some residents compare the conditions on Roosevelt Avenue to a Third World country.
People living in the area have also reported that women selling sex on the streets near businesses remind them of places like the red-light districts in Bangkok. The sidewalks are crowded with illegal vendors selling unregulated food, secondhand clothes, and counterfeit items, making the area look unsanitary.
One local group says Roosevelt Avenue has become a center for brothels, outnumbering even the corner stores. They also claim that more than 70 brothels are operating near schools and religious buildings.
The official criticized Ocasio-Cortez for supporting the legalization of prostitution and policies against police, claiming she has ignored the crime and failed to protect vulnerable women. The official pointed out that many Latino voters are turning away from the Democratic Party because of these issues.
