On Wednesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland told Congress that he plans to release Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on the investigation into President-elect Donald Trump’s alleged election interference in 2020, but only “when permitted by the court.”
This announcement could be embarrassing for Trump as he prepares to return to the White House.
Smith’s report is expected to provide the most detailed explanation of the evidence gathered during the two-year investigation. It will also explain why the Justice Department charged Trump in two separate cases: election interference and mishandling classified documents.
Trump’s legal team has attempted to block the report, arguing it could spread false information from cases that have been dismissed. However, the timing of the report’s release is uncertain.
A federal judge recently blocked its release at the request of two of Trump’s co-defendants in the classified documents case.
The government has asked a federal appeals court to lift this block, so part of the report about election interference may be released soon, while the rest will wait until the classified documents case is resolved.
