President Donald Trump is weighing a significant change to the US’s role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). According to senior US officials, Trump has discussed potentially adjusting America’s NATO engagement to favor member countries that meet a specific defense spending threshold.
This possible policy shift could mean the US might not defend a fellow NATO member under attack if that country hasn’t met the defense spending requirement. This would mark a significant departure from NATO’s core principle, Article 5, which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all.
Trump is also considering prioritizing military exercises with NATO members that meet the defense spending threshold. Additionally, his administration has signaled that the US might reduce its military presence in Europe, with some US troops potentially being repositioned to focus on NATO countries that have met the defense spending requirement.
A National Security Council official emphasized that “President Trump is committed to NATO and Article V.” However, some European ambassadors have expressed concerns about potential changes to the US’s NATO participation.
