Chicago – July 09, 2026

Health insurance premiums under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, are expected to increase again in 2027 after steep hikes this year, according to a new analysis by health policy group KFF. The report found that 77 insurers have proposed a median premium increase of 14% for next year, following an average 20% increase in 2026. Insurers say rising hospital expenses, higher prescription drug costs, inflation, and the expiration of enhanced pandemic-era subsidies are driving the proposed increases.

Middle-income Americans who do not qualify for federal subsidies are expected to feel the greatest financial impact, with many facing significantly higher monthly premiums. Analysts also warn that rising costs are prompting healthier individuals to leave ACA plans, leaving a smaller and more expensive pool of enrollees. Final premium rates will be determined after state and federal regulators complete their reviews later this year.
