Chicago – July 09, 2026

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has appointed Dr. Garth Walker, a senior executive from Rush Health as the city’s new top public health leader, selecting a healthcare veteran to guide efforts aimed at improving community health and addressing long-standing health disparities. The new commissioner will oversee the Chicago Department of Public Health, leading initiatives focused on disease prevention, mental health services, maternal and child health, emergency preparedness, and equitable access to healthcare across the city.

The appointment comes as Chicago continues to strengthen its public health system following lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. City officials said the new leader’s experience in healthcare management, clinical operations, and community partnerships will help advance programs targeting chronic illnesses, behavioral health, and underserved neighborhoods.

Mayor Johnson said the appointment reflects his administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare and building healthier communities. The commissioner is expected to work closely with hospitals, nonprofit organizations, and local agencies to improve health outcomes, respond to public health emergencies, and develop strategies that address the social factors affecting residents’ well-being.
