Chicago – April 16, 2026

More than three dozen Democrats backed an initiative led by Bernie Sanders to halt arms sales to Israel, highlighting rising frustration within the party toward Benjamin Netanyahu and the conflicts in Gaza and Iran.

The proposals, aimed at stopping U.S. transfers of bulldozers and bombs, were unanimously opposed by Republicans and ultimately failed, with votes of 40–59 and 36–63. Still, Sanders has consistently pushed these measures to pressure lawmakers across party lines.

Although similar efforts in 2024 and 2025 were unsuccessful, Democratic support has more than doubled, reflecting shifting attitudes driven by ongoing regional conflicts and growing activism within the party.
