Chicago – March 19, 2026

Prominent political scientist John Mearsheimer has issued a stark warning over the United States’ approach to Iran, arguing the conflict is “heading in the wrong direction.” He contends that Washington is “not winning,” but instead signaling a major strategic miscalculation to the world.

Mearsheimer criticized what he described as a rushed entry into conflict without a clear long-term plan, warning it could damage U.S. credibility. Rather than projecting strength, he said the escalation exposes flawed decision-making.

The realist scholar cautioned that wars against regional powers like Iran are difficult to control and rarely end decisively, often spiraling into prolonged and unpredictable confrontations.
