The Supreme Court of India on Friday ordered the trial court in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, to halt proceedings in the mosque survey case until the Shahi Idgah committee, associated with the Jama Masjid, approaches the High Court. This decision follows violent clashes in Sambhal earlier this week, which resulted in the deaths of five people after a court-ordered survey of the mosque.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar also instructed that the report from the commissioner, who conducted the survey, be kept sealed and not be opened for now.
The case involves claims that the mosque, built by Mughal emperor Babar in 1526, was constructed over a pre-existing temple. The court stated that the mosque committee’s petition should be listed before the High Court within three working days. However, the Supreme Court has postponed hearing the committee’s case until January 6, 2025.
The trial court has been told to refrain from taking any further steps in the matter until January 8, 2025. Additionally, the district administration has been directed to ensure peace and maintain harmony in the area. The court emphasized the need for neutral mediation, instructing local authorities to form mediation committees to avoid further conflict.
