Chicago – February 16, 2026

The Third Governor-General of Pakistan and the man who shaped the early economic destiny of the nation was a brilliant alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University
The Aligarh Foundation
Malik Ghulam Muhammad was known for his astute financial mind, a trait honed during his years at MAO College (now AMU).

  • Education: He graduated from Aligarh, where he built a reputation for intellect and pragmatism.
  • Chartered Accountant: He went on to become one of the first Indian Muslims to qualify as a Chartered Accountant, setting the stage for a distinguished career in finance.
    The Architect of Economy
Before taking the highest office, he was the First Finance Minister of Pakistan (1947–1951).
  • Crisis Manager: In the turbulent days following Partition, he steered the fragile economy through immense challenges, establishing the State Bank of Pakistan and organizing the first national budget.
    The Governor-General
  • Role: He served as the Governor-General (1951–1955) during a critical period of constitutional development.
  • Legacy: While his tenure was marked by political complexity, his role in stabilizing the country’s finances remains a key part of history.
    Why He Matters
Malik Ghulam Muhammad represents the technocratic brilliance that Aligarh produced. From the ledgers of finance to the helm of state, he was a man who understood the power of numbers and governance.
A significant figure in our shared history!
