Chicago – January 13, 2025

The Trump administration has introduced stricter U.S. visa policies that significantly affect Indian students and visa applicants. Student visas (F-1) now face tighter scrutiny, including expanded background and social-media checks, and a rise in visa revocations for compliance issues. Most visa categories again require mandatory in-person interviews, increasing wait times for Indian applicants.

A proposed rule may limit student visas to a fixed duration instead of allowing stay for the full course length, requiring extensions. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is under closer monitoring, with more inspections and evidence requests. For graduates seeking employment, changes to the H-1B work visa—including sharply higher fees—may discourage employers from sponsoring foreign workers, disproportionately affecting Indians.

Overall, the policies aim to reduce immigration, strengthen enforcement, and prioritize national security, making U.S. study and work pathways more costly, uncertain, and time-consuming for Indian applicants.
