Chicago – June 20, 2026

The United States secured first place in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 2-0 and benefiting from Paraguay’s 1-0 victory over Türkiye later in the day.

Playing in Seattle, the Americans delivered another composed performance to earn their second consecutive win of the tournament. The victory moved the U.S. to six points from two matches, putting them in a strong position ahead of the final round of group fixtures. Goals and disciplined defending ensured Australia was unable to find a way back into the contest.

Later, Paraguay edged Türkiye 1-0 in a hard-fought encounter. Despite facing pressure for long stretches, Paraguay held on to claim three crucial points. The result proved significant for the group standings, as it prevented any rival from matching the United States’ position at the top.

With six points and head-to-head victories over both Australia and Paraguay, the United States has mathematically secured first place in Group D. The achievement marks one of the team’s strongest World Cup starts in decades and guarantees a favorable route into the knockout stage.

The Americans will now look to maintain momentum as they prepare for the next phase of the tournament.
