Chicago – April 04, 2026

The White House has unveiled a sweeping budget proposal that calls for a major increase in defense spending while significantly reducing funding for domestic programs. The plan allocates roughly $1.5 trillion to the military, marking one of the largest defense budgets in U.S. history.

To offset costs, the proposal includes cuts of about 10 percent to non-defense spending, affecting housing assistance, healthcare services, education, and other social programs. Officials say the shift is necessary to strengthen national security and streamline government spending.

However, critics argue the cuts could disproportionately impact low- and middle-income Americans. The proposal now heads to Congress, where lawmakers are expected to debate and potentially revise key elements before any final budget is approved.
