Chicago – June 09, 2026

Bhopal, June 9, 2026 — A proposal to rename Barkatullah University as “Vagdevi Bhojpal University” has ignited fierce political controversy in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, with critics accusing the state government of erasing Muslim legacy.

The university’s Executive Council approved the resolution on June 3, 2026, forwarding it to the Madhya Pradesh government. Established in 1970 as Bhopal University, it was renamed Barkatullah University in 1988 to honor freedom fighter Maulana Barkatullah, a prominent independence movement figure.

Critics argue the renaming represents a broader pattern of marginalizing Muslim contributions in Indian history. Social activist Asif Mujtaba criticized what he described as “the BJP government’s ongoing anti-Muslim agenda,” while Md Asif Khan condemned opposition parties’ silence. Kashmir Media Service reported the move as “erasure of Muslim legacy,” noting the university would be renamed after medieval Hindu ruler Raja Bhoj.

The National Herald India reported the controversy erupted into “fresh political and academic debate,” with Congress party members labeling it “name-change politics” that unnecessarily divides Hindus and Muslims. Teacher and student organizations have rallied against the proposal, with the Telegraph India reporting widespread backlash over “erasing freedom fighter legacy”.

Amid growing protests, university officials consider retaining “Barkatullah” for campus buildings like the library or main auditorium. The Madhya Pradesh government faces criticism as protests continue in Bhopal.

The debate reflects deeper tensions over historical memory, religious identity, and political power in contemporary India, with critics pointing to similar cases where Muslim-named institutions have faced renaming proposals under BJP-led governments across the country.
