The Republican-controlled House of Representatives failed Thursday to override two vetoes issued by President Donald Trump, upholding his rejection of bipartisan bills despite some internal party dissent.
The vetoes, the first of Trump’s second term, targeted low-profile measures lacking prior White House objections. One bill aided Colorado communities in financing a water pipeline for tens of thousands, while the other designated an Everglades National Park site as part of the Miccosukee Indian Reservation.
Override attempts fell short of the two-thirds threshold needed in both chambers. Dozens of House Republicans broke ranks—35 on the Colorado bill and two dozen on the Florida measure—but most stuck with Trump amid an election-year focus on national priorities. Sponsors expressed surprise at Trump’s scathing veto messages, viewing them as retribution against past opponents. The White House framed the action as fiscal discipline. No Senate vote occurred, solidifying the vetoes.
