Iran said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States lifts its blockade on Iranian ports, escalating tensions in one of the world’s most important shipping lanes. The move came after Iranian naval forces reportedly fired on vessels attempting to pass through the waterway, while maritime authorities said a tanker and a container ship reported attacks in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly one-fifth of global oil trade, making any disruption a major threat to energy markets and international shipping. The Iranian military said control of the strait had “reverted to its prior condition,” and warned that transit would remain blocked while the U.S. blockade stayed in force.
Ship-tracking data and maritime reports showed some vessels turning back as operators sought safety assurances amid the uncertainty. The latest escalation adds fresh pressure to already fragile efforts to stabilize the Gulf and protect commercial traffic through the narrow passage.
