Iran has created a new government agency to vet and tax vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, tightening its control over one of the world’s most important shipping lanes, while separately saying it is still reviewing the latest U.S. proposal to end the war.
Shipping data firm Lloyd’s List Intelligence said the new Persian Gulf Strait Authority is presenting itself as the only body authorized to approve transits through the narrow waterway. The move has raised fresh concerns about freedom of navigation, with hundreds of commercial vessels already backed up in the Persian Gulf. Maritime experts quoted in reports said such vetting and toll demands could conflict with international law.
At the same time, Iranian officials said Tehran is studying Washington’s peace proposal and will respond through Pakistani mediators. U.S. President Donald Trump said talks with Iran had been “very productive,” raising hopes of an eventual deal, even as tensions over the Strait remain high.
