Negotiators rushed Friday to secure a broader deal after Iran said the Strait of Hormuz was “completely open” to commercial shipping, a move that eased fears over one of the world’s most critical oil routes. The announcement came as talks intensified over a wider ceasefire and terms for ending the conflict, with Washington insisting on free passage and Tehran pressing for concessions on sanctions and other demands.
The waterway carries about 20% of global oil transport, making its status central to energy markets and diplomacy. U.S. President Donald Trump said the strait was open but kept pressure on Tehran, while Iranian officials signaled that any arrangement would remain tied to the ceasefire and monitored shipping lanes.
Despite the opening, negotiators still face major gaps over nuclear limits, regional security and verification, leaving the truce fragile.
