Chicago – April 17, 2026

President Donald Trump’s lawyers are in talks with the Internal Revenue Service to resolve his $10 billion lawsuit over the unauthorized release of his tax information, according to a federal court filing Friday. The filing asks a judge to pause the case for 90 days while both sides work toward a settlement or other resolution.

Trump filed the lawsuit in January against the IRS and Treasury Department, accusing them of failing to protect confidential tax records that were later leaked to media outlets between 2018 and 2020. The case has drawn added attention because Trump is suing the agency he now oversees as president, raising unusual legal and ethical questions.

The dispute stems from the actions of a former IRS contractor who pleaded guilty in 2023 to stealing and leaking tax information. Neither the IRS nor the Justice Department has publicly commented on the status of the negotiations.
