Chicago – March 23, 2026

US President Donald Trump announced a five-day postponement of strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure, citing “very good and productive conversations” toward resolving Middle East hostilities.

In a Truth Social post and remarks to reporters, Trump said envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged a “top” Iranian official, claiming “major points of agreement” and potential for a deal.

Iran swiftly rejected the claims as “fake news.” Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf stated no negotiations occurred, accusing Trump of manipulating oil markets to escape a “quagmire.” Iran’s Revolutionary Guards labeled it “psychological operations,” vowing continued attacks on US targets.

Trump’s announcement followed a 48-hour ultimatum over the Strait of Hormuz, triggering market volatility—oil prices fell 8% to $103/barrel. Third parties like Pakistan may mediate, amid over 2,000 war deaths since February
