Chicago – July 18, 2026
Two US service members were killed and one remains missing following an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on a military base in Jordan on Friday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Saturday.
Casualties and Response
CENTCOM stated the troops died in action while US and partner forces defended against the Iranian assault. Four additional American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals but have since been discharged, while others with minor injuries returned to duty. The identities of the fallen service members will remain withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notifications, CENTCOM said.
Escalating Regional Conflict
The incident marks the first confirmed US military deaths from direct Iranian fire since the opening days of the conflict, intensifying a weeklong escalation between both nations. Media reports indicate the strike targeted Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, which houses American forces. The American death toll in the Iran war now stands at 16, according to Pentagon officials.
As hostilities continue across the region, both sides have increasingly targeted critical military locations in what has become one of the deadliest direct confrontations involving US forces in recent months.
