Chicago – July 19, 2026

U.S. Representative Ralph Norman has announced his candidacy for South Carolina’s vacant U.S. Senate seat following the death of longtime Senator Lindsey Graham, setting up what is expected to be a closely watched Republican primary. Norman, a conservative congressman and member of the House Freedom Caucus, said he plans to champion President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda if elected. His entry into the race comes despite Trump’s public encouragement for Darline Graham, the late senator’s sister and current interim senator, to seek the seat permanently.

Darline Graham has not yet confirmed whether she will run in the August 11 Republican primary. Several other Republican candidates are also expected to compete for the nomination, while Democrats prepare for the general election later this year. Norman said South Carolina needs experienced conservative leadership in Washington and pledged to focus on border security, fiscal discipline and advancing key Republican legislative priorities if elected.
