Chicago – August 16, 2025

The recent killing of four Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza has sent shockwaves through the global media community, prompting urgent warnings from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) about escalating dangers for reporters in conflict zones.

Correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, were killed in a targeted Israeli strike on a tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on August 10, 2025. Two freelance journalists also lost their lives in the attack.

CPJ condemned the incident as a “significant escalation,” characterizing it as a deliberate attempt to silence media coverage. “Israel wiped out an entire news crew,” said CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah. “This is murder, plain and simple.” The organization criticized Israel’s ongoing practice of labeling Palestinian journalists as militants without evidence, raising serious concerns about press freedom and safety.

The killings mark one of the deadliest attacks on journalists since the conflict in Gaza intensified in October 2023, with at least 186 media workers killed to date. Media watchdogs and international observers are calling for accountability, demanding independent investigations and greater protections for journalists operating in war zones.
