Nightline: Illinois Universities Shine in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 Global University Rankings

Chicago – June 20, 2025

Two Illinois universities earned top spots in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report “Best Global Universities” ranking. This ranking looks at things like research, publications, and global reputation.

Northwestern University, in Evanston, was ranked 24th in the world, making it the highest-ranked school in Illinois. Right behind it, the University of Chicago came in 26th.

Among Midwest schools, only the University of Michigan ranked higher, at 21st place. The top three spots on the list were claimed by American universities: Harvard, MIT, and Stanford.

Several other Illinois universities also made the list, though they ranked lower than the top schools. These include:

  • University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign at No. 109
  • University of Illinois, Chicago at No. 261
  • Rush University, Chicago at No. 500
  • Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago at No. 785
  • Loyola University, Chicago at No. 908
  • Northern Illinois University, DeKalb at No. 1,195
  • Southern Illinois University, Carbondale at No. 1,451
  • DePaul University, Chicago at No. 1,845
  • Illinois State University, Normal at No. 1,945
