Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Wednesday that she will not run for governor of California. Many people had wondered if she might try to win this important job after her presidential run did not succeed.
Harris said she spent a lot of time thinking about it because she loves California and its people. But after careful thought, she decided not to join the race this year.
“For now, my leadership and public service will not be in elected office,” Harris explained in her statement. She said she looks forward to traveling around the country, listening to people, and helping other Democrats win elections. She also mentioned she might share her own future plans soon, hinting that she could run for president in 2028.
Harris has not been in the spotlight much since she lost the presidential election to Donald Trump in 2024.
California’s current governor, Gavin Newsom, isn’t allowed to run again because of term limits. Now, other well-known Democrats like Xavier Becerra, who was a health and human services director, and former U.S. Representative Katie Porter, have said they want to be governor.
