Keir Starmer is set to become Britain’s next prime minister after a stunning victory for the Labour Party, according to an exit poll from Thursday’s election. The poll predicts Labour will win 410 out of 650 seats in parliament, a huge turnaround from their poor performance five years ago, which was their worst since 1935. This result would give Labour a majority of 170 seats and end 14 years of Conservative-led government.
“To everyone who has campaigned for Labour in this election, to everyone who voted for us and put their trust in our changed Labour Party – thank you,” Starmer expressed on X.
The Conservatives, led by Rishi Sunak, are expected to win only 131 seats. This would be their worst performance ever. Voters have shown their dissatisfaction with the party due to a cost-of-living crisis and years of political instability and in-fighting, which have seen five different prime ministers since the 2016 Brexit vote.
