A new satirical online petition, “Denmarkification,” is gaining attention from people in California and Denmark. The petition asks Denmark to buy the state of California. As of Tuesday, it had gathered over 200,000 signatures.

The petition was started as a joke in response to President Trump’s ongoing interest in buying Greenland, which is a part of Denmark.

In January, Trump even mentioned using military force to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. However, the leader of Greenland, Múte B. Egede, rejected Trump’s offer, saying his people do not want to become part of the United States.

In a playful tone, the Denmarkification petition suggests President Trump might be willing to sell California, a state where political leaders often disagree with him.

The petition reads, “Let’s be honest – Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan. He’s called it ‘the most ruined state in the Union’ and has had many disagreements with its leaders.”

The petition organizers aim to raise $1 trillion to buy California, but they are only collecting signatures, not money. Experts believe Greenland is becoming more important because melting sea ice is opening new Arctic shipping routes.

If California were ever sold to Denmark, one city might become the capital: Solvang, a city in California known as the “Danish Capital of America.”
