President Donald Trump has approved a groundbreaking nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia that could permit the kingdom to enrich uranium domestically, marking a significant departure from longstanding US non-proliferation policy.
Key Provisions
The 30-year deal, known as a ā123 Agreementā under the US Atomic Energy Act, will allow American companies including Westinghouse to help develop Saudi Arabiaās civilian nuclear industry.
Crucially, the pact omits the āGold Standardā safeguard that traditionally bars partner nations from uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessingāboth potential pathways to nuclear weapons. The agreement also reportedly excludes the International Atomic Energy Agencyās Additional Protocol, which grants inspectors broader verification powers.
Congressional Review and Concerns
The administration must submit the agreement to Congress, which has approximately 90 days to object before it takes effect. Lawmakers and Israeli officials have expressed strong opposition, fearing the deal could enable Saudi Arabia to develop nuclear weapons and trigger regional proliferation. Blocking the agreement would require a two-thirds congressional majority to override a potential presidential veto.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright will sign the pact alongside Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman. The deal represents a major strategic win for Riyadh, which has long sought to reserve enrichment rights.
