Chicago – August 03, 2026

President Donald Trump’s administration is moving toward a sweeping rewrite of Head Start, the federally funded preschool program for low-income children, according to reports from the Associated Press and The Nation. The draft would eliminate federal requirements on class sizes, staff-to-child ratios, health screenings, and parts of the curriculum framework, leaving most decisions to state and local laws.

Critics warn that the change could weaken the program’s quality and make it harder for vulnerable children to receive consistent services. The proposal also appears to add paperwork burdens for homeless and unemployed parents and could restrict enrollment for some immigrant families.

Head Start currently serves more than 500,000 children nationwide and has long been viewed as a benchmark for early childhood education. If finalized, the rule would likely face intense public comment and possible legal challenges before taking effect.
