The United Nations has voiced serious concern over a sharp rise in executions and death sentences in Iran since March. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said at least 56 people have been executed on national security-related charges during the period, including 27 individuals linked to anti-government protests. The UN warned that more than 100 others could face the death penalty on similar charges.
Türk said the increasing use of capital punishment appears aimed at intimidating the public and suppressing dissent. He also raised concerns about reports of unfair trials, coerced confessions, and a lack of due process in several cases. In addition, the UN noted that executions for drug-related offenses remain at an alarming level.
The UN called on Iranian authorities to halt executions, uphold fair trial standards, and work toward abolishing the death penalty. Iran maintains that its judicial system operates within its domestic laws and that capital punishment is necessary to safeguard national security and public order.
