Chicago – September 19, 2025

An elderly British couple, Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie Reynolds, 76, have been freed by Afghanistan’s Taliban after nearly eight months of detention. The couple, who have lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades and ran an educational and training organisation in Bamiyan province, were arrested in February while returning to their home.

Their release followed months of intense negotiations led by Qatar, with cooperation from the UK government and the couple’s family. The Reynolds spent much of their detention apart in difficult conditions, with reports of deteriorating health and limited access to medical care. UN experts had expressed concerns about their physical and mental wellbeing, warning of potential irreversible harm.

After their release, the couple flew to Doha, Qatar, where they will receive medical evaluations before returning to the UK. The Taliban stated the couple violated Afghan law but did not clarify the charges. The British government expressed relief and gratitude to Qatar for their role in securing the couple’s freedom.

Barbie Reynolds, expressing hope for the future, said they consider themselves Afghan citizens and hope to return to Afghanistan if possible. The family’s gratitude highlights the power of international diplomacy in resolving such humanitarian issues.
