Nasry Asfura, a conservative candidate endorsed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, has claimed victory in Honduras’s presidential election following a closely contested and disputed vote. Preliminary results released late Thursday indicated Asfura secured a narrow lead over opposition candidate Xiomara Castro, sparking both celebration among his supporters and protests from opposition groups alleging irregularities.
Asfura, a former mayor of Tegucigalpa, called for unity in his victory speech, pledging to restore economic stability and strengthen ties with the United States. Castro’s campaign, however, has refused to concede, demanding a full recount and citing reports of ballot inconsistencies in several provinces.
International observers have urged transparency and restraint amid escalating tensions. The election marks a pivotal moment for Honduras, a country struggling with corruption scandals, migration pressures, and widespread public mistrust of government institutions.
