Senator Bernie Sanders has sharply rebuked United States foreign policy in the Middle East, accusing key allies Israel and Saudi Arabia of pushing Washington toward a wider war with Iran.
In recent remarks, the Vermont independent argued that both governments are exerting pressure on the U.S. to take military action, warning that such a course would be “disastrous” and unconstitutional without explicit congressional authorization.
Sanders reiterated his long‑standing criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing his government of causing mass civilian casualties in Gaza and violating international law through indiscriminate military operations and blockade tactics. He also described Saudi Arabia as a repressive “dictatorship,” citing its human rights record and role in regional conflicts.
Questioning the moral authority of both allies, Sanders asked whether governments he portrays as authoritarian and violent can credibly claim to champion “freedom” in Iran, and urged the Biden administration to prioritize diplomacy over escalation.
