Chicago – May 11, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that the fragile ceasefire with Iran is on “life support” after he rejected Tehran’s latest response to a U.S. peace proposal. Trump called the Iranian offer “totally unacceptable” and later described it as “garbage,” saying it failed to meet Washington’s demands on the nuclear issue and other key terms.

The remarks came as diplomatic efforts to extend the month-old truce remained deadlocked. According to reports, Iran’s counterproposal sought an end to hostilities, sanctions relief and limits on U.S. pressure in the Strait of Hormuz, while leaving major nuclear questions for later talks.

Trump told reporters the ceasefire was “unbelievably weak,” adding that he had not even finished reading Iran’s reply. Iranian officials, meanwhile, argued that their response protected national interests and did not amount to surrender.

The standoff has raised fresh fears of renewed conflict in the Gulf, where tensions have already disrupted shipping and rattled energy markets.
