Chicago – June 15, 2026

Trump’s recent insults reveal how severely strained his relationships with G7 leaders have become, marking a sharp deterioration in U.S. alliances during his second term.

Over recent months, President Trump has consistently derided most of his Group of 7 counterparts, reigniting past resentments and sparking new conflicts with leaders he once appeared to hold in regard. His latest frustrations stem from their reluctance to support the United States and Israel in their conflict with Iran, a central topic at this year’s summit in Éian, Switzerland.

The cooling of Trump’s rapport with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer exemplifies the tension. After Starmer refused to endorse Trump’s stance on Iran, Trump dismissed him as “no Winston Churchill,” undermining what initially seemed a productive relationship.

European officials no longer perceive the United States as a collaborator on crucial matters such as climate initiatives and security, regarding the U.S. as a potential threat following Trump’s provocative Iran actions, disregard for NATO, and controversial aspirations regarding Greenland.

Since Trump’s second term began, allies have adopted a strategy of cooperating when feasible but asserting themselves when necessary, leaving the G7 without unified stance on the path forward.
