Datuk Dr. Shad Saleem Faruqi, a distinguished constitutional scholar and public intellectual, continues to shape Malaysia’s legal and academic landscape through decades of influential work. Born on November 17, 1946, in New Delhi, Faruqi is a proud alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), where he earned his LL.B., laying the foundation for his lifelong dedication to constitutional law and public service.
Currently holding the prestigious Tunku Abdul Rahman Chair in Constitutional Law at the University of Malaya, Faruqi has built a remarkable academic career spanning over five decades. Since joining Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 1971, he has served in multiple leadership roles, including Head of the Law Diploma Program, Assistant Rector, Assistant Vice-Chancellor, and Legal Advisor.
Between 2019 and 2021, he was appointed the fourth holder of the Tun Hussein Onn Chair in International Studies at ISIS Malaysia. A prolific author, Faruqi has published more than 10 books and over 500 articles on governance, civil liberties, and constitutionalism.
Renowned for his balanced and principled perspectives, Faruqi remains a key voice in Malaysia’s discourse on human rights, religious freedom, and democratic governance.
