House Democrats are preparing a broad oversight campaign against President Donald Trump and his political and business network if they regain control of the chamber in November, according to people familiar with the discussions.
Rather than making impeachment their first step, Democratic lawmakers and committee aides are considering hearings, subpoenas and demands for corporate records to examine administration decisions and possible benefits directed toward Trump, his family, allies or political donors.reuters
Potential areas of scrutiny include Department of Homeland Security contracts, financing for a proposed White House ballroom, corporate donations and alleged “pay-to-play” arrangements. Democrats are also examining financial entities linked to Trump’s family, including 1789 Capital, where his son Donald Trump Jr. is a partner, as well as companies with government contracts or regulatory interests.
Party leaders have already begun requesting information from companies and contractors, although such requests lack subpoena power while Democrats remain in the minority. No final list of targets has been established, and no formal investigations have begun.
Democrats say impeachment remains possible if investigations uncover evidence of an impeachable offense, but they want to build a factual record first rather than launch an immediate removal effort.
