Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) has laid out an ambitious progressive economic agenda as he seriously considers a 2028 presidential run, positioning himself as the candidate to deliver “America’s next New Deal.”

Economic Realignment Proposal

The 49-year-old Silicon Valley congressman calls for an “economic realignment” to address what he describes as a breaking point in America, warning that without dramatic change, the country risks social destabilization.

His platform, termed “New Economic Patriotism,” includes establishing a national industrial bank to fund domestic manufacturing, implementing a wealth tax on billionaires, expanding Medicare for All, and ensuring workers have equity stakes in the AI revolution.

Strategic Positioning

Khanna acknowledges trailing in polls at approximately 2% behind better-known contenders like former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom. However, he has steadily raised his profile through advocacy on issues ranging from Epstein file transparency to industrial policy, recently touring Pennsylvania and Rust Belt states to build grassroots support.

Progressive Mandate

Khanna argues Democrats should embrace progressive policies without fear of Republican labels, stating that calling President Trump a “fascist” for a decade hasn’t prevented his electoral success. He emphasizes that voters care primarily about healthcare, jobs, affordable childcare, and whether candidates represent their economic interests. Khanna expects to make a final decision on his candidacy around Thanksgiving 2026.
