Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has defended a memorandum of understanding with the United States, describing it as the best path forward for resolving tensions between Tehran and Washington. Pezeshkian said Iran’s Supreme National Security Council considered the agreement the most suitable option for protecting the country’s dignity, wisdom and national interests.
The president rejected suggestions that the memorandum represented a surrender to U.S. demands. He argued that diplomacy could help Iran move away from a difficult situation characterized by neither full war nor lasting peace.
The comments come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States and continuing uncertainty over efforts to reach a broader agreement. The memorandum was intended to provide a framework for ending hostilities and opening negotiations on key issues.
However, the agreement’s 60-day deadline expired without a final settlement. Tehran and Washington have continued to blame each other for the breakdown, while regional tensions remain high.
