In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian exports, Ontario Premier Doug Ford is speaking out against the move. Ford called Trump’s plan “crazy” and “ridiculous,” saying it would hurt millions of American and Canadian workers.
Ford emphasized the importance of strengthening the nearly trillion-dollar two-way trade relationship between the US and Canada. He suggested that instead of imposing tariffs, the two countries should focus on creating more jobs and prosperity.
In a bold move, Ford even jokingly offered a “counteroffer” to Trump’s idea of making Canada the 51st state. “How about if we buy Alaska and throw in Minnesota?” he said.
Ford’s concerns about the tariff are rooted in the significant trade relationship between Ontario and the US. He noted that nine million Americans produce products for Ontario every day, and that the tariff would ultimately hurt workers on both sides of the border.
The Ontario premier is seeking a face-to-face meeting with Trump to discuss the issue. He has also reached out to US senators and governors to make it happen. Ford believes that by working together, the US and Canada can create more jobs and prosperity for both countries.
