Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday while leading a peaceful sit-in protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on Lok Kalyan Marg, demanding accountability over alleged police brutality against student demonstrators.

Gandhi, along with senior Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, had marched to the Prime Minister’s home to seek the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Home Minister Amit Shah following violent clashes that left at least 60 protesters injured on Monday.

Police removed the opposition leaders after they refused to disperse, with Gandhi asserting that the “voice of students will not be ignored” and vowing that the opposition would continue its campaign until the government took responsibility.

Union Minister Pradhan later criticized the protest, accusing Gandhi of exploiting students for political gain, while Congress leaders condemned the detentions as evidence of a government “trembling in fear.”
