Chicago – July 21, 2026

US President Donald Trump sparked viral reactions after an uncomfortably prolonged presence on the podium following the 2026 FIFA World Cup final trophy presentation to Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

After Spain’s 1–0 extra-time victory over Argentina, Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino jointly handed the trophy to Spanish captain Rodri, but Trump remained clapping and smiling on stage while the team prepared for their celebration.

Footage showed Infantino visibly attempting to guide Trump aside, even sprinting back across the stage moments before the trophy lift, as Trump only stepped away after gold confetti cannons marked the official start of Spain’s celebrations.

The incident evoked comparisons to a similar awkward moment at the previous year’s Club World Cup, reinforcing concerns about protocol breaches during high-profile sporting ceremonies. While the scene drew widespread attention online, commentators noted it “could have been worse,” given Trump’s continued proximity to the celebrating squad.
