Chicago – February 17, 2026

Tensions flared in Kotdwar after a dispute over the name of a local clothing shop escalated into a communal controversy, drawing statewide attention and multiple police cases.

The incident began on January 26 (Republic Day) when a group of individuals, reportedly linked to Bajrang Dal, confronted a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper over the use of the word “Baba” in his shop’s name. The group claimed the name hurt religious sentiments due to its perceived association with a nearby temple.

During the confrontation, a local gym trainer, Deepak Kumar, intervened in support of the shopkeeper. In a video that later went viral, he identified himself as “Mohammad Deepak,” a statement that quickly became the focal point of heated debate on social media.

Following the incident, police registered multiple FIRs against individuals from both sides, increased security in the town, and conducted flag marches to prevent further unrest. Authorities stated that the situation is under control and that efforts are being made to maintain communal harmony.

The controversy has since attracted political reactions and online campaigns, further amplifying tensions. Officials confirmed that the shop’s name will remain unchanged after discussions between community members and local administration.
