In recent weeks, Pope Leo XIV has intensified his criticism of the war in Iran, shifting from prayers for peace to direct condemnation—particularly of Donald Trump’s rhetoric. After Trump threatened to “destroy Iranian civilization” ahead of the April 8 ceasefire, Leo called the remark “truly unacceptable” and urged citizens to pressure political leaders to reject war.
Cardinal Robert McElroy, the archbishop of Washington argued the conflict fails just war principles, calling it a “war of choice” despite Iran’s record. Leo has consistently advocated for a ceasefire, emphasizing dialogue, respect, and lasting peace.
While Catholic leadership is defending the rights of immigrants and calling for humane treatment, the majority of the Catholic population in the U.S. voted for Mr. Trump, who campaigned on cracking down on immigration and securing the border. He won 55% of the Catholic vote, according to a Pew Research survey of validated voters.
