Chicago – October 10, 2025

In a recent court hearing, the counsel representing former JNU student leader Umar Khalid argued strongly in favor of his innocence in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. The defense contended that Khalid has been wrongly implicated and that there is no direct evidence linking him to any act of violence or conspiracy. His lawyer emphasized that Khalid’s speeches promoted peace and unity, not hatred or unrest, and that his arrest was based on selective interpretation of his words.

The counsel further noted that Khalid has already spent over three years in custody without trial, calling this a violation of his fundamental rights. Citing inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case and lack of concrete proof, the defense urged the court to grant bail on humanitarian and constitutional grounds. The hearing concluded with the court reserving its decision on the bail plea.

It is to be noted here that a Muslim Student leader is being held without any solid evidence of his involvement in the 2020 Delhi riots. For five years his pleas for bail have been rejected as well.
