Chicago – April 01, 2026
The Supreme Court appeared ready Wednesday to reject President Donald Trump’s bid to curb birthright citizenship, after justices from both ideological wings questioned whether his order aligns with the Constitution or federal law. Trump attended the arguments, becoming the first sitting president known to do so, as the court considered a central piece of his immigration crackdown.
Trump’s executive order, signed on his first day back in office in 2025, seeks to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the United States to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily. Lower courts have repeatedly blocked the policy, and it has not taken effect anywhere in the country.
A ruling is expected by early summer, and the case could produce a major test of presidential power and a long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment.
