Rep. Dean Phillips, a Democratic congressman from Minnesota, criticized President Joe Biden on Monday following the president’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, despite previously stating he would not offer such a pardon. Phillips expressed concerns about perceived double standards in the justice system, writing on social media that it appears some individuals are “above the law,” and lamenting the influence of money in politics. “It’s time for the exhausted majority to condemn and confront legalized corruption,” Phillips added.
President Biden granted Hunter Biden a sweeping pardon on Sunday after he had pleaded guilty to federal tax charges and been convicted of felony gun charges earlier this year. Hunter Biden was convicted for lying on a gun purchase form about his drug use.
Phillips, who had run for the Democratic presidential nomination, argued that both Hunter Biden and former President Donald Trump may not have faced criminal charges if they were not political figures. He also suggested that the presidential pardon power has been “abused” by both Trump and Biden, calling for reforms.
The White House faced questions over Biden’s earlier statements, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre asserting that the president remains committed to being truthful with the American people.
