The Trump administration has admitted in court filings that it canceled about $7.6 billion in clean-energy grants for projects in states that voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. The disclosure has intensified accusations that the cuts were politically motivated rather than based on program performance or taxpayer value.
In the filing, government lawyers said the affected awards were terminated “based solely” on the political identity of the grant recipient’s state, according to reporting from the Associated Press and The Guardian. The Energy Department has disputed that characterization, saying the grants were reviewed individually and canceled for policy reasons, not politics.
The grants had supported hundreds of projects across 16 states, including battery plants, hydrogen technology, grid upgrades, and carbon-capture work. Democratic lawmakers and clean-energy advocates have condemned the move as an abuse of federal power, while the administration maintains it was aligning spending with its priorities.
