Chicago – August 06, 2026

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Moderna’s first mRNA-based seasonal influenza vaccine, marking a significant milestone in the use of messenger RNA technology beyond COVID-19 vaccines. The approval provides a new option for protecting adults against seasonal influenza and expands the range of vaccines available ahead of future flu seasons.

The vaccine uses mRNA technology to instruct the body’s cells to produce proteins that trigger an immune response against influenza viruses. Clinical trials found the vaccine generated a strong immune response and met safety standards required for regulatory approval.

Moderna said the approval validates its mRNA platform and supports the development of future vaccines targeting multiple respiratory viruses, including combination shots for influenza and COVID-19. Health experts believe the technology could allow manufacturers to update flu vaccines more quickly as virus strains evolve.

The approval comes as researchers continue exploring broader applications of mRNA technology for infectious diseases and other medical conditions. Distribution of the vaccine is expected to begin before the upcoming influenza season.
