Chicago – April 28, 2026

The Justice Department has indicted former FBI Director James Comey for a second time, intensifying a long-running clash between the former bureau chief and President Donald Trump’s administration. CNN reported that the latest indictment came from a federal grand jury, although the specific charges were not immediately clear.

The move follows an earlier case against Comey that alleged false statements and obstruction tied to congressional testimony about FBI communications with the media. In a September 2025 press release, the Justice Department said Comey was charged with obstruction of a congressional investigation and making a false statement about authorizing an anonymous source. That case was later dismissed after a judge ruled the interim U.S. attorney had been improperly appointed, according to CNN reporting.

The renewed indictment underscores the administration’s push to revisit high-profile cases involving Trump critics. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the department would hold powerful figures accountable, while FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was committed to restoring public trust. Comey has previously denied wrongdoing and maintained his innocence.

The new case is likely to deepen debate over whether the Justice Department is pursuing justice or political retribution.
