AAP and Congress announce seat-sharing arrangement for Delhi, Gujarat, Goa, and Haryana; to proceed separately in Punjab.

Chicago – February 24, 2024

The Aam Aadmi Party will run for four Lok Sabha seats in Delhi and the Congress for three, the two parties of the INDIA alliance revealed on Saturday, as they disclosed their seat-sharing plans for the national capital, Gujarat, Goa, and Haryana.

Sandeep Pathak, AAP General Secretary (organization), stated that his party allied with the Congress by putting its political objectives aside because it thinks that “the country is important and the party secondary.”

The Congress and the AAP are part of the INDIA alliance, created by opposition parties to challenge the BJP in the 2019 general elections.

At a joint press conference on Saturday, Congress leader Mukul Wasnik revealed that the AAP will run for Lok Sabha seats in New Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, and East Delhi. In contrast, his party will run in Chandni Chowk, Northeast Delhi, and Northwest Delhi.

He stated that the Congress workers in Delhi will ensure that INDIA bloc candidates win all seven seats in the national capital.

According to the seat-sharing agreement, the AAP would contest the Bharuch and Bhavnagar seats in Gujarat, while the Congress will run on the remaining 24.

The Congress would run for both Lok Sabha seats in Goa and the lone seat in Chandigarh, said Wasnik. The AAP had previously declared Venzy Viegas, a Benaulim MLA, as its contender for the South Goa Lok Sabha seat, now held by Congress’ Francisco Sardinha.

According to the seat-sharing agreement, the AAP will compete for Bharuch and Bhavnagar seats in Gujarat, while the Congress will contest the remaining 24.

The Congress will run for both Lok Sabha seats in Goa and the sole seat in Chandigarh.

The Congress will contest nine of the ten Lok Sabha seats in Haryana, while the AAP will run in Kurukshetra.

Given the “special circumstances” in Punjab, the AAP and the Congress have chosen to contest the Lok Sabha elections separately.

Wasnik expressed optimism that the Congress workers in Gujarat’s Bharuch, where late Congress leader Ahmed Patel was born, would respect the decision to surrender the seat to AAP.
